Christmas Handicaps 2012

Striders Juniors like to reward those that improve, so we have handicap races three times a year: the Easter Bunny races, the winter races and the Christmas races. We do a mile race on the track, a 5K race from Shelly Beach and a 6.7K race at the Nepean River. All three of our Christmas handicaps this year had quite low attendance, as we held them quite close to Christmas itself, so we will hold them earlier next year. Still ...... there were more prizes for everyone that was there! I only have photos from the mile at the moment, which was held on Xmas Eve!

The Nepean River handicap was won by Daniel Francken, who ran the 6.7K in a time of 22:37 and improved by 2 mins. and 36 seconds. The 5K handicap was won by Josh Phillips in 19:32 with an improvement of 12 seconds. The 1 mile handicap was won by 10 year old Samuel Greenland in a time of 6:12 seconds - an improvement of 4 seconds. Tessa Constantine won best dressed Christmas Strider again (see below)!! The mile was held at Passmore Reserve this time, as the track was shut on Xmas Eve.

Samuel wins, ahead of his dad Simon. Next we see Tessa and then Josh Phillips. Greg and Wally are timing.

Tessa unchallenged as best dressed. She didn't run in the booties.

There's Caroline finishing, ahead of Gus Wong - both of us have been out of action and certainly didn't improve.

Daniel and Hannah both come 3rd at Schools Nationals in Tasmania

Here are some great pictures of Daniel Francken and Hannah Gibson. Daniel Francken, aged 15,  was 3rd in the under 16 boys 3K with a time of 8:55. We are very proud of him! Hannah, aged 16, was 3rd in the 17-18 girls 2K steeplechase with a time of 6:53, and 6th in the 3K with 10:17 - and she makes it al look so effortless.

Daniel is 3rd from left. What a nice setting for a running track.

What style! Look at that stride length! Is that Hannah watching to the left, or a look alike?

State Relays weekend - 17th and 18th November.

This was an exhausting but very enjoyable weekend. For a club that is not primarily a track club, we did very well indeed too. We had 30 runners, some running in up to 3 races. Adam Halmy also ran for the open men in the 1500m. We entered 13 teams in all and came away with 5 team bronze medals and one silver. A lot of teams were 4th or 5th, so only just outside the medals. There were a lot of PBs too - Olivia Hogg trimmed her 1500m time by 20 seconds. Full results are on the ANSW website - see link opposite. Now, enjoy some of the pictures and videos below...

State 3K champs 10th Nov. SOPAC

Ten Juniors entered, and 8 juniors showed up and ran in the state 3K championships on Sat. 10th Nov. at SOPAC. Earlier in the day there were 'supporting events' and Bathany Halmy (17) ran 2:18:95 in the 800m. Tessa Constantine (13) and Joe Burgess (16) also ran the 800m and both ran PBs - 2:28 and 2:00:24 respectively. Well done! We sat in bay 9 lower seats - which is now 'our spot'. Tessa stayed on and supported the 3K runners, which was lovely! In the men's H race Ben Jagger (14) ran a 30 second PB with 10:32 - his mum's roars could be heard for miles around. Declan King-Smith (13) ran a PB with 11:58. In the G race, Laclan Cooper (13) won spectacularly in 9:52 and Tom Davies (11) ran 10:37 - he is a rising star! In the F race, returning from injury, Josh Phillips (13) ran a very respectable 9:57. In the E race Adam Halmy (15) ran the fastest junior time of the night with 9:39. I ran in the women's C race (as usual my result is unavailable) - it was under 12:30 anyway. Amelia Gorman (16) ran 11:16 in the women's B race, and finally, Hannah Gibson (16) ran 10:07 in the women's A race. We apologise that Tony did not get a usable photo of Amelia or Adam - they were all too dark or blurred :(

Ben determined. He ran a 30 second PB!

Declan King-Smith gets a PB

Caroline (me) at the start of the women's C race.
Tom Davies is just 11 years old and ran 10:37, beating many 2,3,4 and 5 times his age.

OK, so, this is how hard you need to work to win the race and get a PB of 9:52 at age 13!

10K results for Striders Lane Cove 10K and Rebel Sport 10K

Only two juniors ran in the last Striders 10K race of the season, but quality made up for quantity! Emma Mcglinn has reduced her PB by just under 6 minutes over the season. Hannah Gibson holds the girl's juniors 10K record at 38:30 and she won the 10K open women's event!!! What a STAR!!! She looked effortless too. David Gardiner got close to the male juniors 10K record of 36:08, when he ran a blistering 36:35 in the Rebel sport 10K. Ben Jagger and Gus Wong also ran and did well.

Hannah was described as looking 'effortless' as she won the women's race in the last Striders 10K of the season at Lane Cove in a time of 38:30 - a juniors record!

The Summer Athletics season with Junior Striders

Nov 3rd 2012 Club Premiership at Narabeen and Campbelltown.

It being close to home, I popped along to Narabeen to watch and ensure a 100m relay happened (having run the Striders 10K at Lane Cove in the morning, as did Hannah Gibson and Emma McGlinn). In the 100m Bethany ran 13:90, Ben Carter 14:30 and brother Tom 13:09. In the 400m, Tessa ran 1:03:78, Ben C. 1:02:24, Tom C. 58:82 and Gabe Corke a blistering 52:78. In the 1500m Amelia ran 5:14, Bethany 5:26, Joe Burgess 4:24 and Jason (the older bloke in the relay) ran 4:40. I don't think any juniors went to Campbelltown. So.... well done one and all!

Joe Burgess, Jason McIntosh, Gabe Corke and Tom Carter before the 100m relay
Again, we managed a 100m relay, this time with senior Strider Jason McIntosh joining in. So, who has been in both relays so far? We came last again, but this could be something to do with how Tom had been plucked from volunteering in the canteen, where he had just consumed a few lardy sandwiches. Gabe had been off sick in the week, had vomitted after his 400m race, and just went off for another quick vomit before the start of the relay. Jason had an injury of some sort. Only Joe was on form ....

October27th 2012 Club Premiership at Bankstown and Illawong.

It was lovely to have enough juniors at Bankstown to run a 100m relay, with Joe Burgess making his debut as a Sydney Strider. We had a bit of baton trouble (dropping it), so came last, but ran very well. Bethany did the 60m, the 200m, the 800m (2:22) and her first ever 2K steeplechase. Her brother Adam did his first steeplechase too - this is becoming the Striders flagship event. I also ran it, as did Hannah Gibson with a PB of 7:08. Joe became the junior club's fastest 800m runner to date with a time of 2:03:44. Tessa Constantine went all the way to Illawong and ran 2:31 in the 800m and 1:15 in the 400m hurdles. Great work Striders!!!!!!!  Next Saturday pm. you can race at Narabeen and Campbelltown.

Bethany on leg 1 hands over to brother Adam for leg 2. As you can see, Striders are doing well at this point!

Kombat All Schools state championships were held over the 4 day period 11 - 14 Oct.

Although this is a schools event and not a Junior Striders event, athletes can choose to wear their Striders top instead of their school top. We are delighted when they do this - it shows great club loyalty!  Email in your picture: a picture speaks 1000 words

Serpentine Handicap in London Oct. 6th

Tony and Gus were scratch runners in the Serpentine 7K handicap in Hyde Park - London.
This was Caroline's running club for 11 years, until 2000, so she had a genuine race number!
Tony represented the family well, with Gus fastest in the family on the day, but, like his mum,
suffering from too much holiday!

ANSW State Relay Championships 17th - 18th November 2012

Striders juniors run these relays each year. Below are some photos from our archives to give you the idea. As you can see, although the relays are for the under 14 age group and above, we have always had a lot of our under 12s running - you are often faster than a lot of under 14s! We have traditionally always run the 800m and 1500m relays - as we are a long distance club, but this year we hope to have some 400m and field event teams. So, think about what you'd like to do. First step is to renew your ANSW membership (or join for the first time) and get your cloth numbers. The ANSW website link is on the right ->
Under 14 boys 2010: Josh Mills, the Whelans, Luke Gorman, Josh Phillips, Daniel Francken
and Harry Armstrong. Liam Gorman posing in the front. Most were under 12s.

2010 under 14 girls: Sally Rasmussen, Ariana, Caroline (a bit older),
Hannah Rasmussen and Caitlin Bariol

Don't they look young?? 2010 under 16 boys win bronze: Bryce, Gus, Daniel and David.

2011 - the scene before the start. Who can you spot?
Josh Phillips and Taiki looking nervous. 2011.

Medals again in 2011, but this time with Paul Loader instead of Bryce.

2011 - Ben Carter, Hugo or Gus Whelan, Luke, Liam, Gus or Hugo Whelan and Ben Jagger.
Spot the medals??

2011- Some actual racing - no cheating, as they have batons!
